Here on the Direct Source Games blog, we’ve often talked about the importance of board games. In addition to being fun, board games help to fine-tune reasoning abilities and present a great bonding opportunity.
A recent article in Chicago Parent was written by Elliott Miller, a father of five who uses board games as an opportunity to spend time with his children.
Elliot identifies an issue that most parents can relate to. The hectic pace of everyday life can make it difficult to find time to sit back, relax and have a good time:
“As a father of five kids growing up in this information overloaded world, I’ve faced the same struggle as many parents. It is harder than ever to find quality family time. Facebook, video games and headphones are all distractions that keep our children busy, but also keep them isolated from spending time together as a family.”
A lifelong board game enthusiast, Miller admits that the demands of raising a family meant that the games were “pushed to the back of the closet” for some time. One of the main reasons the family lost interest in board games was due to the perceived lack of variety on the market – a myth that, after some research, Miller is quick to dispel:
“The board game industry is much larger than the shelves of your local [store] would lead you to believe,” he says. “There are games for every interest.” Miller urges that board game enthusiasts look toward specialty game shops to truly tap into the diversity the board game industry has to offer.
After discovering the wide variety of games available today, Miller and his family rekindled their love affair with board games and now play together regularly.
If your family has a diverse set of interests when it comes to board games, visit our online games store. We are the source for card games, educational games, board games, and other fun games, with a large variety of board games available and some of the most competitive party game pricing on the Internet.

We played quite a few games as a family when I was a kid, and even now we like to play games when we get together again. And I like how you mentioned the quote about variety; there is an immense variety in games that many people don’t realize.

This was a great post. It is so easy to let life get so hectic and demanding that we barely take time to get to know each other in a family. I grew up playing board games with my family and have loved them since. I plan to do this with my children too. When my kids are older perhaps we’ll have a board game night every week. Thanks!
